Penguin Book Cover Competition 2015

Below are my cover designs for 'Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit', a novel by Jeanette Winterton. The set brief was to design three different covers using different methods: a printing process, photograph and a digital design.

Winterton's semi autobiographical novel addresses some very important topics such as sexual identity, religion, alienation and personal relationships. I have tried to represent some aspects of book and television series in the cover designs.
This cover became a screen print. Design is based on a vintage radio as in the book it represents a great deal of time spent with her mother.
Jeanette and her mother spent many hours listening to the missionary report and plotting on a map all the events taking place.
In the television adaption of the novel, there is a scene where Jeanette is is tied with 'the red chords of love' to try and 'change her ways' . This inspired the photographic cover design.
This is the digital design, it uses a combitnation of photography and illustration. I was thinking about how Jeanette's life is very segmented like the symbolic oranges that feature throughout the storyline.
